Media and my life

I am Xiao Li, a senior student majoring in Technical Communication. Weibo and We-chat are the media I consume in my everyday life. If you are not Chinese, you may not know what I am talking about. Weibo is the Chinese version of Twitter. Weibo has the biggest user group in the world. Many stars, news media and official departments have Weibo accounts. You can follow anyone that you are interested in on Weibo. Weibo has the hottest topics that users can join in. In a word, people can use Weibo to know everything about what is going on in the world.

On the other hand, We-chat is a phone talk app. People can add each other to become friends. The users can text, send pictures, voice messages, and video calls for free. The main reason that I love We-chat is because of the secure privacy protection. We-chat has a feature named “Moments” that allows the users to post pictures, words and share links on it. The friends of the person who created the post can like it or write comments. If the author of the post has friend A and Friend B, but they don’t know each other, they can all view the post because of the friend they have in common; however, they won’t see each other’s comments about the post. I think this is a perfect feature to protect privacy.

I am hoping this class makes me more media literate. I think media literacy is an ability that can obtain, analyze and export media messages. By reading the textbook, I found that I use media in my daily life. I spend so much time on my phone and computer. Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is open We-chat’s Moments to see news that my friends have posted. The media tools I use bring the world closer. I have a video call with We-chat with my parents every day, even though they are in China. No matter where I am, once my phone can connect to the Internet, I can have video calls by free. About four years ago, I had to suffer the expensive phone fee to call my parents. Every night before I go to sleep, I watch the Weibo for news. I love how new media has changed my life.
